About the Department of Physical Education

Established: 1930 | Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Physical Education and Psychology since 2024, December, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala

Our Legacy

Founded in 1930 by the visionary Professor C. P. Andrews, the Department of Physical Education at Mahatma Gandhi University has been a pioneer in promoting physical education across Kerala. Professor Andrews established a robust infrastructure and training network, laying the foundation for a culture of physical fitness and sportsmanship in the state. His successors have diligently carried forward his vision, adapting to the evolving needs of students and the educational landscape.

Facilities and Infrastructure

The department boasts an extensive array of playfields, a distinction unmatched by any other institution in Kerala. This extensive infrastructure supports a continuous process of modernization, guided by a strategic plan for staged sports development. These initiatives have been made possible through the collective efforts of the student community, staff, alumni, management, and well-wishers.

Commitment to Hockey

A notable aspect of our department is its unwavering commitment to nurturing hockey, our national sport, within Kerala. The department has played a pivotal role in promoting and developing hockey talent, contributing significantly to the sport's growth in the region.
